Keeping it Reel

High School Summer Program FAQ

If you’ve visited our High School Summer Program Page, you probably know a little bit about what our program has to offer.  We know a program like this is a big investment of time, money, and creative energy.  If you or your parents have questions, we may be able to answer them here.

What are the goals of the High School Summer Program?

These courses are designed to give you a genuine collegiate film school experience using the same industry-standard film production equipment, software, and facilities you’ll use in college and beyond.

What is the typical class size?

Class sizes are limited to give you plenty of individual attention and access to the space, equipment, and facilities you’ll need to explore your personal creative vision. Our typical student-to-faculty ratio is 10-to-1.

What kind of housing and meals can I expect?

If you need college housing, your tuition rate covers housing and all of your meals. You’ll live with other summer program students and like-minded college resident assistants who share your love of storytelling and the creative arts. If you live nearby, you can take courses without housing at a course tuition only rate.

How do you select students?

Columbia College Hollywood welcomes summer program applications from all currently enrolled high school students with a passion for visual and entertainment media, who are looking for an intensive, two-week  college-level experience focused on digital filmmaking, acting, editing, visual effects, or acting. No prior filmmaking, editing, acting, or screenwriting experience is required.  Class size is limited, so we suggest applying early to secure your seat in your preferred course.

Columbia College Hollywood does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, religion, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability in admissions and/or all other institutional policies.

Who will my classmates be?

High School Summer Program students come from high schools all over the U.S.  Most students take one, two, or three courses during the summer between their junior and senior year.

Who are the faculty?

Your instructors are Columbia College Hollywood faculty members who are also working entertainment industry professionals.

Is there a graduation performance at the end of my course?

At the end of your two-week course, we host a graduation day for you and your crewmates, cast mates, co-writers, collaborators, and family members where we’ll celebrate by screening your work in our 4K surround sound theater.

What is the schedule like?

High School Summer courses are all two-week intensives. That means you’ll be up early for breakfast, then in class on campus each weekday from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm. You’ll have breaks for lunch and for just hanging out with new friends. On weekends, you’ll take field trips to Hollywood studios and production companies that are all within easy driving distance of our campus.

What do I do when I’m not in class?

Eat, study, play. We want your summer program to give you a taste of the Columbia College Hollywood experience, so when you’re not on campus, you’ll want to study, write, collaborate, and rehearse with friends – then take a break. Go to the movies or the nearby mall. Take advantage of field trips and meet-&-greets with special film industry guests. You’ll never have so much fun working so hard.

Can I receive college credit for completing the course?

If you successfully complete the course, you’ll earn 4 college credits. That’s equivalent to one regular 11-week Columbia College Hollywood course. When you’re ready for college, if you’re accepted into Columbia College Hollywood, those credits will fulfill one elective course requirement. As with any college course credit, if you choose to attend a different college or university, acceptance of the credits you earn for successful completion of your summer program course here is at the complete discretion of the institution to which you may seek to transfer.
